Like all creative fields, the FX industry can be tricky to break into. A lot depends on your portfolio and your resume of experience.
We have a course series called The Business of Making Monsters by respected FX veteran Shannon Shea. It covers the ins and outs of getting a job in the FX industry. Shannon shares portfolio and resume tips, the best way to get started, and a tremendous amount of knowledge and insight for anyone looking to break into the FX industry.
Here are links to all three parts of that course series:

Being willing to work hard for very little money is how many people start. Get on film sets, and be a PA. If you work with a supportive crew, they will allow you to spend some time in the department you are interested in, so take those opportunities to meet and learn from the makeup department or SFX team.
Start knocking on doors of effects shops in your area with a portfolio that shows off your skills and versatility. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is all it takes for someone to give you a shot.
No matter how long it takes, don’t stop practicing your craft. Keep creating and learning as much as you can and become the best you can be.
Good luck!
